What to Write in a Card When "Thinking of You" Isn't Going to Cut It
Every card in the aisle says "thinking of you" in a soft font over a watercolor branch. None of them are wrong, exactly. They are just built to be safe, and safe is frequently the wrong tool.
Before you write anything, answer one question: is this card going with them, or at them?
Those are two completely different cards, and picking the wrong one is how a card lands badly.
The short answer
With them: name the situation, take their side, do not look for a silver lining. "This is completely unfair and I am furious on your behalf" does more work than three sentences about strength and healing.
At them: be short and be about the behavior, not the person. "The pan has been soaking since Sunday" beats an essay. Short reads as confident. Long reads as a grievance.
Part one: cards you send in solidarity with someone
When everyone keeps saying "everything happens for a reason"
They are in it. They do not need a lesson. They have heard that phrase four times this week, most recently from a coworker who does not know their last name.
Write: "There is no reason. This is just bad and it happened to you. I am here."
No pivot, no bright side. The Everything Happens for a Reason Greeting Card ($4.50) handles the platitude so your handwritten message does not have to.
When there is no occasion at all
The best cards arrive on a Tuesday for no reason.
Write: something small and specific. "I am still annoyed on your behalf about the thing with your boss." Specificity is what separates a real card from a formality.
The No Special Occasion Greeting Card ($4.50). We have more on cards to send for no reason at all.
Part two: cards you send at someone
For the person who has earned it
The For You. Fuck Off. Greeting Card. ($4.50) does not require a build-up. The front is the whole argument.
Write: nothing, or close to it. A signature is enough. Anything longer starts to sound like you are justifying yourself, which hands them the upper hand.
For the person who will not stop asking about your business
The relative who wants to know when you are having kids. The colleague who asks what you paid for your house.
The Mind Your Own Fucking Business Greeting Card ($4.50). Same rule: brevity is the message.
For the one who needs to hear it from an authority
The Logan Roy Energy Greeting Card ($4.50) is for the situation that calls for dismissal rather than explanation.
Part three: when you cannot sign it
Sometimes the right recipient is not someone you can safely send a message to. A landlord. A former boss. A neighbor you will see every morning for the next nine years.
Send a Greeting Card Anonymously is $12. You pick the card, pick a closing line from our list, and give us the address. We handwrite it in block capitals, stamp it, and mail it in a plain white envelope with no return address, no logo, and no packing slip. Mailed within two business days, US addresses only.
Two cards to choose from:
Just Because. Nine cheerful little faces on the front. Inside, it points out that fucking off does not seem to come naturally to them. Technically more helpful than hostile.
Thinking of You. Retro chevrons, warm colors, the most sincere-looking card we make. Inside: and getting pissed off. It reads like a real card right up until the moment it does not.
You pick the closing line rather than writing your own. That is deliberate. It keeps this a joke instead of something else, and frankly our lines are funnier than anyone's at 2am.
The rules: one card, one address, one time. Adults only. If a card lands somewhere it is not wanted, that person emails stopmailing@fuckoffflags.com and we never mail that address again. If the goal is to frighten someone, we are the wrong shop.
Frequently asked questions
What do you write when you do not know what to say? Name the situation and take their side. "This is unfair and I am angry for you" beats anything about strength or healing.
Is it rude to send a funny card to someone having a hard time? Depends on the person. For grief and serious illness, follow their lead. For job loss, divorce, breakups and terrible coworkers, humor often lands better than sympathy, because it treats them as a person having a bad time rather than a patient.
How long should a handwritten message be? Two or three sentences. One specific detail beats a paragraph of general warmth.
Can I send a greeting card anonymously? Yes. $12, handwritten, plain envelope, no return address, mailed within two business days to US addresses.
Are these cards rude? Some of them, yes. That is the product. Sometimes the polite version has already been tried three times and did not work.
Decide whether it is going with them or at them. Then say the true thing and stop.
And if you cannot sign it, we will.
